Making the Most of the "Tree of Life"
Like many wonder ingredients of the natural world that find their place in personal care products, modern medicines, food and beverages, baobab oil has a unique, fascinating story of origin that is waiting to be told. Here, Earthoil uncovers the truth behind the baobab fruit’s legend and explains how its oil is now being sustainably sourced and finds its way into both organic and conventional natural hair and skin care products around the world.
Nature knows best
Baobab oil, taken from the fruit of the iconic baobab tree, often referred to as the tree of life due its wide-ranging medicinal, nutritional and cosmetic benefits, has been used for centuries by African women to protect their hair and skin against the harsh climate. Like many traditions that pre-date modern scientific research, this use of the fruit of the baobab tree would only have endured if it had provided real benefits.
Other, more fantastical folklore that surrounds the baobab tree may also have some foundation in truth. In West Africa, it is believed that spirits inhabit the flowers that will attract a lion should anyone pluck them. In Zambia, washing baobab seeds in rivers offers protection against crocodiles and in Southern Nigeria, the tree is worshipped as a fertility symbol and people still marry beneath its branches today.
Moisturising properties
Baobab oil is thought to improve the elasticity of the skin and encourage regeneration of skin cells. It is rich in Vitamin A, D, E, F, oleic acid, linoleic acid and Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, contributing to its moisturising, emollient and soothing properties. Vitamins A and F specifically support the rejuvenation and renewal of cell membranes and Vitamin E is a superior antioxidant which helps defend against the signs of ageing. Baobab oil is also used to alleviate pain of burns, reduce scarring from acne and heal scars and stretch marks. The moisturising properties of the oil also help improve the condition of hair. Its Vitamin A, E and F aid in soothing itchy and irritated scalps, reducing hair breakage and regenerating hair follicles.
From legend to reality
These numerous benefits to health and wellbeing mean that baobab oil can add real value to body creams, lotions, bath oils, massage products and cosmetics. Earthoil has been sourcing baobab oil for over 10 years – originally sourcing the seeds from the Zambezi valley but more recently from the Kenyan coastal plains. Generally, baobabs are hand-harvested in rural remote regions and the fruit is most often collected by rural collection groups. These collection groups work forests collecting the large seed pods and then remove the seeds from the ‘cream of tartar’ style pulp which surrounds the seeds. Earthoil cold presses this very hard seed at its Kenyan processing facility to produce a golden oil.
Earthoil offers both conventional and organic Baobab oil. Please contact us for samples.

EARTHOIL OFFERS CHERRY SEED OIL FOR FINER COMPLEXIONS
Earthoil plc, specialist in pure, organic, fair trade essential and cold pressed vegetable seed oils, has added cherry seed oil to its portfolio of products for cosmetics applications. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, organic cherry seed oil provides natural, effective hydration, making it a valuable addition in a variety of skin care products.
Oil from the kernel of the sour cherry (also known as tart cherry) is already popular in lip balms, moisturising creams for face and body and is a key ingredient in many successful anti-ageing ranges thanks to its proven antioxidant effects and ability to rid the skin of dead cells. Especially beneficial to acne-prone or inflamed skin, the vitamins and nutrients contained within the fruit are known to play an important role in collagen synthesis and skin healing processes.
Slightly viscous, yellow in colour with a hint of marzipan, the oil’s principal components are oleic acid, linoleic acid and alpha eleostearic acid. Easy to incorporate into a variety of cosmetic and personal care applications, sour cherry seed oil can be used in soaps, creams, balms, lotions and tonics.
Earthoil sources its organic sour cherry from Malatya in central Turkey, where cherries are consumed largely in the form of juice. Earthoil purchases the otherwise obsolete cherry kernels from the small scale cherry farmers. Once cleaned and dried, the kernels are then cold pressed at Earthoil’s organic and fair-trade certified vegetable oil plant in Kenya to produce oil of prunus cerasus. Supply is sustainable and customers are guaranteed standardised oil of one variety.
Cherry seed oil is the latest addition to Earthoil’s range of fully organically and fair trade certified vegetable seed oils. To see the full selection, browse the Earthoil website at http://www.earthoil.com.

IS JUST-IN-TIME ALWAYS ENOUGH?
Assessing the impact of a Just-in-time production strategy and its current effect on the flavour industry
The past two years will certainly go down as some of the most challenging in history for the flavour industry. The impact of global natural disasters – earthquakes in Haiti, Japan and Indonesia, floods in Northern India and a drought in Brazil, for example – have contributed to significant raw material shortages.
Limited supply is naturally affecting those producers who have chosen to adopt a just-in-time production strategy. But how exactly is this effect felt and does this have an impact on the rest of the industry? In the following article, Hugo Bovill, managing director, Treatt plc, considers just-in-time manufacturing and the reasons why it finds favour with many. He also examines the effect it has on the remainder of the supply chain and the impact it is currently having on the flavour industry as a whole.
Just-in-time manufacturing explained
A just-in-time (JIT) production strategy aims to improve a business’s return on investment by reducing in-process inventory and the associated carrying costs. The basic principle behind JIT is that inventory is waste – it is seen as incurring costs, or waste, rather than adding and storing value. Implemented correctly, JIT focuses on continuous improvement and can increase a manufacturing organisation’s return on investment while also enhancing quality and efficiency.
In short, the just-in-time approach focuses on having “the right material, at the right time, at the right place and in the exact amount”. The benefits of this strategy are clear and offer obvious advantages for the producer – he must only carry enough inventory to meet his requirements, and he reduces his costs as there is no storage requirement for excess product. He also does not have to tie up significant amounts of working capital in stock during financially challenging times.
Despite these positives, the question that inevitably arises when considering the JIT production strategy, however, is ‘Is there a situation when it isn’t the most suitable approach? And can a JIT manufacturing strategy in fact lead to serious disadvantages for the producer and customer?’ The answer may lie in other external factors influencing an industry at a particular time.
Let’s consider the key factors currently affecting the flavour industry and the impact they are currently having on just-in-time manufacturing strategies.
Worldwide shortages
An unprecedented number of natural disasters over the past couple of years – forest fires, earthquakes, floods and mudslides, to name just a few – have affected every region of the world. This has had a severe impact on crops, which, in turn, has reduced the availability of some raw materials. And, where availability may not always be affected, the quality of raw materials is, which means they are unsuitable for use and samples are rejected.
In addition to the limited availability of raw materials thanks to these natural influences, the industry has also felt the effect of a stop-start purchasing trend among buyers. As with the majority of sectors, the flavour industry was unable to avoid the impact of the global economic downturn. Customers began to fear that the economy was slowing to a stop and, as a result, ceased buying raw materials. Chemical plants subsequently closed and farmers planted fewer crops through lack of confidence so there were fewer materials available to purchase. However, when demand started to increase once again, buyers rushed to secure supplies causing immediate shortages.
These factors combined highlight a potentially negative impact of a JIT manufacturing approach. Reduced raw material availability, coupled with a reluctance to hold inventory because of its associated costs and the lack of financial credit offered to suppliers, has lowered the amount of ‘buffer’ stock held within that chain. So, if a manufacturer does not hold enough of a particular product to satisfy a customer order, he or the customer must look elsewhere. This contributes to longer lead times between supplier and customer – up to ten weeks in some cases – which disrupts the speed and efficiency of the supply chain.
Increased volatility
The stop-start purchasing trend also exposes the pricing of these materials to greater volatility and increased influence by manufacturers and speculators who do hold stock. It therefore becomes much more difficult to forecast the price of raw materials, causing purchasers to be cautious when it comes to buying them.
On top of this, the limited availability of crops means that suppliers of raw materials are both reluctant and often unable to commit to contracts even at open prices. This means that they have no obligation to their customers – the flavour manufacturers – despite previous sales or historical relationships. At the same time, however, this lack of contract ensures that the manufacturers have no commitments or obligations to their suppliers should the price of the raw material fall.
Strict shipping regulations
Lower available stock levels are further exacerbated by a lengthening of the time it now takes to move goods to suppliers following lot sample approval or other confirmations. High fuel prices have resulted in a reduction in the fleet size of ocean-going vessels and a fleet-wide go slow is also in force to maximise fuel economy. In addition, far stricter controls relating to the appropriate shipping of hazardous goods is contributing to an overall slowdown in the arrival of materials.
Too high a price to pay?
Although a just-in-time manufacturing strategy offers clear benefits, its effectiveness does depend on other factors influencing an industry at any given time. For a just-in-time manufacturing strategy to be effective, it requires a level of price stability in the market, consistent material quality and availability plus a relatively steady demand. Flavour ingredient producers at source cannot offer such guarantees. Manufacturers should therefore adapt their strategies to accommodate the challenging times ahead to ensure continuity of supply and support the industry’s continued recovery.

Thursday, January 05, 2012 GO ORGANIC |
Clarifying the complexities of organic certification
As new research reveals that 83 per cent of Britons buy organic food, advocates claim that these findings dispel the myth that organic produce is exclusively for a small minority with steadfast organic principles. The organic market is now firmly positioned in the mainstream with brands like Yeo Valley and Green & Blacks enjoying a prominent share.
Increased awareness of the benefits of organic food and farming has also encouraged major retailers to take note with organic ranges widely available in supermarkets. Indeed, Tesco has reported that a quarter of its customers buy organic produce once a month. These figures are supported by the findings of the Organic Trade Board research, which found that 64 per cent of respondents buy organic food from supermarkets.
Although the economic downturn has had an impact on the food industry, the organic sector remains one of significant potential which a growing number of producers are keen to capitalise on. And, while organic food sales dropped last year; it is important to note that sales of organic health and beauty products increased by a third to £36 million. Many producers remain intimidated, however, by the seemingly unending list of rules and regulations they must comply with to supply organic produce. Here, Rob Hardy, special projects director at organic and pressed seed oil specialist Earthoil Plantations, provides an overview of organic certification, highlighting the key steps and considerations to achieve it.
Why certify?
Over the last 30 years, organic certification has provided a legislated framework which has assisted in achieving greater consumer confidence in organic agriculture. Its importance was accelerated after the adoption of EU regulation 2092/91 in 1991. Further regulations and guidelines in the 1999 Codex Alimentarius, together with the publication of the United States National Organic Programme in 2000, have created what is now a well-regulated marketplace.
While the process of organic certification is not a simple one, its purpose is. Its primary aim is to independently verify that an organic product meets the specifications as stipulated by the applied organic standard. The product can therefore be legally sold within a regulated marketplace such as the EU, the USA and other countries – Japan, for example. Organic certification also permits equivalence – a concept necessary to enable global organic trade and facilitate the marketing of organic products at point of sale.
In practice, organic certification also offers a tangible mark of assurance for consumers, as demonstrated by the use of the Soil Association logo in the UK and Ecocert in Europe and beyond. The Soil Association logo is regarded as a widely trusted and recognised organic symbol – a reputation built on the Soil Association’s public profile and its commitment to high standards and rigorous inspection and certification protocols. Ecocert provides organic certification services to 80 countries worldwide and certifies its own ‘fair-trade’ type standard – Bio-equitable.
Understanding the basics of the regulatory landscape
International level
This falls within the regulatory system and is covered by Codex Alimentarius. Created in 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations and World Health Organisation (WHO), the Codex Alimentarius Commission develops food standards, guidelines and related texts such as codes of practice under the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme. Its main purpose is to protect consumer health, ensure fair trade practices in the food industry and promote coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organisations. It is the basic standard of the free market. Organic food standards, however, are modelled on EU regulation.
European level
In June 2007, the European regulations were updated and Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products was published. It came into force on 1 January 2009 and repealed the former regulation (EEC) No 2092/91. On 18 September 2008 the rules were published as Commission Regulation (EC) No 889/2008 which established the requirements for the implementation of regulation No 834/2007.
Each EU member state has different methods to implement the EU regulation at the members’ state level. Most work through Accredited Private Certification bodies. However, as an example, Denmark provides this through its own Government Department – ‘The Plant Directorate’. Imports from other countries into Denmark are controlled by The Danish Veterinary and Food Agency.
UK level
Originally, UK certification was administered via the UK Register of Organic Food Standards (UKROFS). This was established in 1987 to define a UK organic standard, to hold an official list of organic operators and to register all UK organic inspection and certification bodies. Operated by an independent board and administered by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), UKROFS ensured quality controls through annual surveillance of certifier’s offices, sample inspections of organic operators and registration of all UK organic inspectors. In 2003, the Advisory Committee replaced the UKROFS board of organic standards, with DEFRA continuing to administer EU regulation requirements.
US level
The National Organic Program (NOP) is the regulatory system which covers the USA. Published in 2000, the NOP has helped to create a significant organic market place in the US. The US, in fact, contributes to the largest share of the worldwide organic market, which Organic Monitor estimates is worth some $50 billion.
The three steps to certification
As a general rule, the certification process involves three key stages. The first, application, requires operators to submit full details of their operations to the relevant organic certification body. To certify a farm organic, detailed maps, including non-organic areas, must be submitted. For a processing facility, information regarding product flow as well as the separation between organic and non-organic sections must also be described.
It is important to note that a two year conversion period is required before land can be certified organic. This extends to three years for existing perennial crops. Simultaneous (that is land and livestock together) conversion is permitted for livestock, providing full standards are followed. Full organic standards must be applied for the duration of the conversion period to qualify for organic certified status. The US NOP has a requirement of three years free of any prohibited inputs to qualify for organic status. This is effectively a three year conversion period. The land must be organic before an organic crop can be established. Interestingly, processing facilities do not have to include a conversion period, though 95 per cent of the ingredients used must be certified organic. The remaining five per cent should be organic standard approved materials.
Inspection is the second step. As a minimum, inspections should take place annually. Operators must show, via records and practices, they have complied with all organic standards. Crucially, they should also demonstrate maintenance of organic integrity throughout the manufacturing process; this includes full traceability of product.
The final step is compliance and certification. This must be completed independently of inspection. It is conducted by a certification officer and ultimately a certification committee who reviews the inspection report against organic standards and issue a compliance form based on the findings. This lists any corrective actions necessary to comply with the standards and maintain organic status. Sanctions are based on the scale of any infringement of the standards and can ultimately result in organic status being withdrawn, removing the operator’s right to market organic products. Any precedent decisions or those requiring closer scrutiny are forwarded to the certification committee.
Standard selection
Although there is a largely uniform process to achieve organic status, there are, in fact, several types of organic standards. Currently, the primary organic standards are covered by the various regulations such as the (EC) No 834/2007 and (EC) No 889/2008, as well as the NOP in the USA. Included in the EU regulation, for example, are producers (including farmers and growers), livestock, cropping and inputs (fertilisers, composts and crop protection materials). Processing is also included under this umbrella – from simple packing to manufacturing of complex multi-ingredient products.
In general terms the principles are very similar across organic standards. But differences do exist. For example, cropping standards between the EU and NOP do not vary significantly; there can be more substantial differences between standards on livestock however. The EU has a number of what it terms ‘approved third countries’, such as India and Australia – this means the EU has accepted these countries’ standards as equivalent to the EU. Ironically, the United States and the EU has yet to broker this equivalence. This results in the US certification body having to ensure EU requirements are met if products are to be exported from the US into the EU. While any products exported to the US either from within the EU or a third country must be certified to the NOP directly via the operator’s certification body.
Moreover, there are now organic standards and certification available for products not yet covered by the legally regulated framework, such as health and beauty, and textiles. These standards are set by private standard setters, often in the NGO sector. The Soil Association and Ecocert both have standards for cosmetics for example, but there are also agreed cosmetic standards called Cosmetics Organic & Natural Standard (‘cosmos’). A consortium of certifiers (including ICEA, BDIH, Bioforum, Ecocert and the Soil Association) sets these standards with the objective of harmonising them. This creates consistency and ease of trade, enables further development of the organic market, and, importantly, provides additional opportunities for farmers, processors and retailers to develop a wider choice of organic products. It is unlikely that full harmonisation will be achieved until cosmetic standards and others, such as textiles fall under EU regulations and programmes like the NOP.
Conclusion
Its significant commercial potential makes the organic market an appealing prospect for many. But its apparent complexities can deter. By equipping themselves with the relevant facts, and by working with organic experts like Earthoil, manufacturers can approach the organic certification process with confidence. As a result, they will be able to reap the rewards of this exciting and lucrative market.

Earthoil Plantations Ltd, a subsidiary of Treatt plc, supplier of organic, fair trade certified essential and cold pressed seed oils, has facilitated the development of twenty four fresh water wells in its Indian mint growing regions. The ‘Deep wells project’, funded through the Earthoil Organic Farms Foundation (EOFF) and project partner Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, improves local health by bringing high quality drinking water to thousands of villagers in India’s Uttar Pradesh region.
Continuing its ethical approach to sourcing natural, organic oils, Earthoil remains committed to supporting its local farmers grow and harvest mint in India. Earthoil approved farmers receive an organic premium for their crop as well as a further contribution to a community fund, to be spent on projects to improve facilities and well-being of the local villagers.
The EOFF investment panel, which includes representatives of the head farmers, women from the community, Earthoil, key buyers and a local Red Cross representative, meets to identify key projects to be supported by the community fund. Whilst access to healthcare may seem an obvious priority, availability of good quality drinking water offers prevention rather than cure. Where wells already exist, they are shallow and susceptible to contamination, struggling to support increasing demands of irrigation and a growing population. The basic need is not for just any water, but for good quality drinking water, which has to be sourced from far below the surface.
Work began in April 2011, and by July 2011, the new deep wells were constructed. The wells are approximately 40 metres deep and produce much cleaner, better tasting water for a local population of around 28,000 people.
Basic necessities vastly improve the quality of life in rural areas and Earthoil intends for this deep wells initiative to be the first of many projects to improve life in this region. Hugo Bovill, Group CEO, Treatt plc stated “Treatt, through investment in Earthoil, is delighted to help farmers and loyal suppliers improve the quality of life of local communities”

Hibiscus Treattarome 9766 delivers a water white flavor, without the typical bright red color, allowing flavorists to use this herb creatively in new beverage blends.
Across the world Hibiscus is appreciated as a non-caffeinated tisane and used in combination with other teas, it creates a blend known as “red zinger”. Whole hibiscus flowers have a slightly sour, fruity flavor and are full of vitamin C. Hibiscus Treattarome 9766 delivers a well-balanced, cranberry aroma and a mildly astringent flavor.
The Treattarome is produced from the calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa by using Treatt’s specialised distillation technology to obtain the maximum flavor with minimum processing intervention. There is no oil or alcohol added and the resulting distillate is both clear and soluble in water. Used at levels of 0.2%, Hibiscus Treattarome 9766 imparts a strong berry like character with a fresh leafy topnote. This fruity, floral scent of hibiscus is due to components including hexanal, trans-2-hexenal, cis-3-hexenol, nonanal, furfural, eucalyptol, linalool oxides, linalool, and alpha-terpineol.
Hibiscus Treattarome 9766 contains no preservatives or antioxidants and when chilled is stable for six months. This 100% natural, FTNF (From The Named Food) distillate carries a clean label declaration and is listed as a food ingredient by the USFDA (21 CFR 172.510). It is suitable for a number of applications including beverages, dairy, alcoholic drinks, juices and juice drinks.
The launch of Hibiscus Treattarome 9766 further extends the company’s Treattarome portfolio of natural distillates. Other flavors available in the range include watermelon, spearmint and ginger.

Tuesday, April 19, 2011 EARTHOIL PLANTATIONS AND EAST AFRICAN FARMERS LEAD THE WAY IN FAIR TRADE & SUSTAINABILITY
|
Tuesday, April 19, 2011 EARTHOIL PLANTATIONS AND EAST AFRICAN FARMERS LEAD THE WAY IN FAIR TRADE & SUSTAINABILITY |
Earthoil Plantations, through the Kenya Organic Oil Farmers Association (KOOFA), can now offer soothing, camphorous tea tree oils direct from an organic and sustainable source. This news comes as a welcome development for manufacturers looking to boost the ethical credentials of their products and ensure their widespread consumer appeal.
Established to provide local farmers with the vital skills required to grow organic essential oils, KOOFA now has over 535 active members, all growing organic and fair trade certified tea tree oil. The project, which is now maturing, is improving the yields and volumes of tea tree oil it produces to meet the overwhelming demands. It also complements Earthoil’s currently available, certified organic tea tree oils from East Africa.
Earthoil purchases only the tea tree leaves from KOOFA, to produce the aromatic essential oil, leaving the woody stems for the farmers to use as firewood, and for other purposes including fencing. This has the additional benefit of alleviating the need to cut down trees from the protected, local Mount Kenya forest for everyday use. Continuing the sustainability cycle, Earthoil uses recycled materials from another of its local projects to fuel the distillation of oil from the fresh tea tree leaves. The depleted leaves are then returned as compost to the fields.
Campbell Walter, Sales and Marketing Director, Earthoil commented: “Growing tea tree is a new way of life for the KOOFA farmers. Our work with the organisation ensures the local growers and producers receive significant rewards. We provide financial support to their local social fund, and guarantee that the farmers are paid premium prices for their crop. Coupled with a zero‑waste tea tree oil production process, Earthoil is remaining true to its principles in producing sustainable, fair trade, fair for life essential oils, which so many product formulators are now seeking.”
Tea tree oil, with its clean, slightly spicy aroma is widely regarded as having antiseptic and antifungal properties. Earthoil’s organic essential oils are finding growing popularity with cosmetics, household, perfumery and personal product developers who are increasingly sourcing more natural and ethical products to respond to the demands of their customers.

Tuesday, March 29, 2011 TREATT & EARTHOIL TAKE THE LEAD WITH NEW FURNOCOUMARIN CITRUS OILS
|
Tuesday, March 29, 2011 TREATT & EARTHOIL TAKE THE LEAD WITH NEW FURNOCOUMARIN CITRUS OILS |
Earthoil Plantations, together with its parent company, Treatt plc, has launched an exciting new range of reduced furanocoumarin citrus oils, developed specifically for use in fragrance and cosmetic applications. Consisting of bergamot, lemon, lime and grapefruit options, this range of oils enables perfumers to use citrus oils creatively without exceeding furanocoumarin limits permitted in consumer products.
Earthoil’s natural oils capture the characteristics of cold pressed oils whilst containing very low levels of furanocoumarins. Believed to cause allergic skin reactions, furanocoumarins are a class of organic chemical compounds from natural sources. The furanocoumarin content in cold pressed citrus oils has been a focus for the fragrance and cosmetics industry for some time. The company has used its expertise and proprietary technology to achieve a limited content of these particular molecules, broadening the possibilities for perfumers to incorporate true citrus aromas into their products.
Each product in the range confers an authentic aroma to a variety of cosmetic applications. The low furanocoumarin lemon oil, for example, demonstrates some herbal, green characteristics alongside the distinctive odour of fresh lemon peel, while the bergamot oil provides a rich, fruity and sweet cologne top note. Low furanocoumarin grapefruit oil is full and zesty, and the tangy lime oil is particularly suited for use in fragrances.
Earthoil has a stream of new, organic oils and natural fractions planned, as it continues to develop exciting ingredients for the cosmetics market.

Wednesday, December 01, 2010 FAIRER FLAVOURS & FRAGRANCES FOR ALL
|
Wednesday, December 01, 2010 FAIRER FLAVOURS & FRAGRANCES FOR ALL |
Consumers today have a conscience. Natural, organic, ethical and sustainable have become everyday vocabulary. This indicates significant potential for food and beverage manufacturers who are both keen to employ more ethical practices and capitalize on this growing market, as well as for fragrances. The flavor industry in particular, which is continually in pursuit of unusual and exotic flavors to meet consumer demand, frequently sources its ingredients from the developing regions at the centre of the fair trade debate.
Equally, fair trade in the fragrance and personal care industry is on the increase. For a number of years, the beauty market has been the subject of media criticism in terms of the ethical and environmental impact. As a result, consumer demand for personal care products using natural, ethical and sustainable ingredients has risen, and manufacturers have been under pressure to respond.
Since the concept of fair trade hit the mainstream, however, the number of product launches has remained steady. Like organic produce, it takes longer for manufacturers to source fair trade ingredients and develop end products. Because of this, consumer demand for fair trade products has outweighed supply. Many perfumers, flavorists and manufacturers are therefore seeking ingredient suppliers to help them respond, by providing the ingredients to create ethical products and bridge the gap between supply and demand. Treatt, for example, can help them to develop quality products with high consumer appeal through its range of ethically traded, 100 percent natural and organic flavor and fragrance ingredients.
Guaranteeing a fair deal
In 2007, Treatt invested in the Earthoil group of companies, a specialist in the manufacture and supply of organically certified and fairly traded essential and pressed seed oils. Committed to sustainable and ethical practice, both companies appreciate the importance of ingredient traceability and fair trading.
The fundamental of fair trade is paying a fair price. Earthoil is dedicated to purchasing its oils directly from source and at a fair and sustainable price. It also works closely with growers, exchanging knowledge and offering advice to aid efficient and sustainable organic growing practices. Growers benefit from the group’s global market knowledge and can therefore tailor their crop planning to meet market demand. It also offers expert advice on geographical issues, crop and soil suitability and irrigation requirements, as well as sharing best practice on processing, distilling and storage techniques. These factors ensure a fair price and a sustainable living for growers, particularly in developing regions.
Manufacturers also want to know that they are getting a fair deal for fair trade. Treatt assures its customers of its commitment to both them and the supplier. By ensuring high standards throughout its business, maintaining a premium quality, stable supply and delivering promptly, fair trade can be achieved across the board.
A win-win situation
Consumers are more aware than ever of the world around them. They are concerned about the impact the foods they eat and the personal care products they use have on the environment – and on others. By developing products using fairly traded fragrance and flavor ingredients, manufacturers can appease consumer conscience and create successful products – ethically.

Earthoil Plantations, leading grower and supplier of organically-certified essential and pressed seed oils, will be highlighting its extensive range of fair trade ingredients at this year’s In-Cosmetics. Visitors to the Earthoil stand can learn more about the company’s specialist community grower projects, as well as its broad product portfolio for cosmetic and personal care applications.
As demand for products containing ethically-sourced ingredients soars, formulators are looking for traceable raw materials to help them carve their share in the crowded marketplace. The company manages all aspects of these community projects – from the employment of field officers to ensuring farmers are educated about organic fertiliser methods. This ethical approach coupled with its unique technological expertise enable Earthoil to respond to the changing demands in product development.
Key Earthoil projects include an initiative in South Africa to provide farmers with access to land, farming expertise and equipment to grow a number of organic essential oil crops – rose geranium, for example. The company has also established a mint oil programme in India’s Uttar Pradesh region, working with an organic grower group of over 600 small-scale mint farmers to produce organically certified peppermint, spearmint and corn mint oils. This specific project was awarded IMO ‘Fair for Life’ status, recognising Earthoil’s commitment to ethical and sustainable farming plus benefits to the local community, suppliers and customers. A third programme in Kenya involves over 200 farmers growing a variety of vegetable seed and essential oil crops.
Organic citrus oils from Earthoil will also feature at the show. These reduced furanocoumarin citrus oils have been developed to deliver enhanced flexibility in the formulation of fragrance and cosmetics products. With lemon, lime, grapefruit and bergamot varieties available, the oils impart a distinct citrus aroma, while containing low levels of furanocoumarins.

World-leading fragrance ingredient supplier, Treatt, together with its subsidiary, organic essential and pressed seed oil specialist, Earthoil Plantations, will present an impressive array of perfumery and cosmetic ingredients at this year’s Cannes World Perfumery Congress. With a wide selection of natural, organic and sustainably produced ingredients, highlights on show will include a range of organic essential oils plus other organic seed and vegetable oils for the cosmetics industry. Visitors to the congress will also be able to learn more about Earthoil’s grower projects. Through these projects, established to support local farming communities, Earthoil meets the increasing demand from perfumery and cosmetics houses for ethically-sourced raw materials, driven by the aspirations of environmentally-minded consumers.
On stand, Treatt will showcase organic low allergen essential oils, designed to facilitate perfumers’ compliance with the latest allergen regulations. Close relationships with local growers ensures positive relations between the Treatt Group and its suppliers, resulting in stable supply and consistent quality. Wednesday, March 25, 2009 EARTHOIL INDIA AWARDED FAIR FOR LIFE STATUS
|
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 EARTHOIL INDIA AWARDED FAIR FOR LIFE STATUS |
Organic oil specialist, Earthoil, a subsidiary of Treatt plc, has been awarded IMO (Institute for Marketecology) Fair for Life status for its Indian mint growing project (www.fairforlife.net). Granted by the IMO Social and Fair Trade Certification programme, this success reflects Earthoil’s strong values and commitment to ethical trading.[1] It also validates its position as a key supplier and producer of organic and fair trade ingredients into the cosmetics, flavour and fragrance sectors.
Fair for Life is a brand neutral third party certification programme for social accountability and fair trade in agricultural, manufacturing and trading operations. To achieve Fair for Life status, Earthoil India had to fulfil certain key criteria. These included guaranteeing good working conditions, respecting core labour rights and ensuring smallholder groups have a fair relationship with farmer organisations (or the contracting company) and the individual farmer. Earthoil’s Indian grower project received a full audit by IMO prior to the award.
Commenting on the accreditation, Campbell Walter, sales and marketing director, Earthoil, said:“We’re delighted to be awarded Fair for Life Status – it is a tangible acknowledgement of our dedication to ethical trading and practices. At Earthoil, we firmly believe that ethical trade and organic farming practices are inextricably linked. By offering our growers better trading conditions, we are contributing to sustainable development and securing the rights of producers, workers and their communities in developing countries.
“The establishment of the Earthoil Foundation is an example of our commitment to growers. Through this scheme, we ensure premium payments are made to our individual farmers for their organic products. Importantly, we also make payments into a community fund. The farmers then decide democratically how these funds will be spent within their community – whether on health, education or cultural enhancement.”
Hugo Bovill, managing director, Treatt plc, added: “I would like to thank the 600 farmers involved with Earthoil India. This award of Fair for Life status is a positive development for them and for Earthoil. This independent accreditation is a significant achievement and demonstrates that Earthoil is a leader in bringing to market organic and fair trade ingredients for use in the cosmetic, flavour and fragrance industries.”
Since its foundation in 2003, Earthoil India has grown steadily as a managed community project in Uttar Pradesh from 200 to 600 small-scale farmers. It was initially formed to manage Earthoil’s existing organic mint oil project and facilitate further development and sourcing of organic products from India. Now a firmly established organisation, the company’s ‘on-the-ground’ approach has resulted in Earthoil becoming a major supplier of organic and fair trade peppermint, cornmint (arvensis) and spearmint oils, menthol, rectified arvensis oil plus dementholised arvensis oil.

|
Tuesday, July 01, 2008 FOUR MORE FRUITY FLAVORS FROM TREATT |
Treatt plc, leading independent flavor and fragrance ingredient specialist, has unveiled the latest launches in its innovative, 100% natural Treattarome® range of clear distillates. Black Raspberry Treattarome 9846, Marionberry Treattarome 9848, Pear Treattarome 9870 and Papaya Treattarome 9835 are the most recent additions to Treatt’s expanding range of FTNF (From The Named Food) flavor ingredients. These new varieties offer flavorists added versatility to incorporate both unusual and traditional fruit flavors in a wide range of applications.
Black Raspberry Treattarome 9846 is wholly distilled from black raspberries, Rubus leucodermis or Rubus occidentalis, and delivers an authentic and well-rounded black raspberry character. The product provides a full black raspberry flavor profile with fruity and estery notes followed by a distinct, seedy character. Varying dosage levels are possible. At 0.1%, for example, it delivers an intense, seedy black raspberry character – fresh, creamy, floral, berry-like notes and fruity as a sole flavoring. At 0.05% or less, it confers a fruity, berry-like character with seedy undertones, which is excellent for fruit drinks.
A cross between Chehalem and Olallieberry blackberries, Marionberry captures the best attributes of both berries and yields an aromatic bouquet with an intense blackberry flavor. Distilled wholly from Rubus Eubatus cultivars (minimum 90% Marionberry), Marionberry Treattarome 9848 delivers a unique and complex flavor profile with an underlying earthiness, hints of sweetness and a lively tartness.
Pear Treattarome 9870 is distilled from European pears, Pyrus communis. From the fruit ester top notes to the warm succulent back notes, this essence provides a complete, well-rounded and fruity pear flavor to a wide range of applications, including beverages, dairy products and desserts.
Imparting an authentic papaya flavor to many food systems, Papaya Treattarome 9835 confers a tropical, fruity top note with a contrasting acid aroma for an authentic, full-bodied papaya profile.
All ingredients in the Treattarome range are extracted using Treatt’s specialized, proprietary technology to ensure maximum flavor entrapment. The resulting products are water white, high impact distillates which are entirely water soluble. Treattarome flavor ingredients are suitable for a multitude of applications including beverages, alcoholic drinks, dairy and confectionery products.
The latest launches complement the growing selection of products in the Treattarome range, including Cherry Treattarome Sweet 9850, Cherry Treattarome Sour 9851 and Apricot Treattarome 9853, launched earlier this year.

Wednesday, June 25, 2008 REACH - THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE
|
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 REACH - THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE |
Joseph S. Tomusange, REACH coordinator, Treatt plc
With first pre-registration fast approaching, manufacturers and suppliers of chemical substances are bracing themselves for the impact of REACH – the new chemical regulation introduced by the European Union.
Described in some quarters as possibly the most complex set of regulations issued by an international organisation, REACH may appear to be a minefield for those it affects. With so many factors to consider, the challenge for companies is gaining a thorough understanding of the implications that REACH will have on their business activities.
Here, Treatt provides a step-by-step guide on the scope of REACH regulation. The company offers insights from an EU-based company’s perspective, presents key considerations and helpful hints to get prepared for REACH. It demonstrates that with careful planning and preparation, REACH is not the daunting task it may seem.
REACH explained
REACH – the Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation (and Restriction) of Chemicals – is the new European Union regulation which came into force on 1 June 2007. It replaces a number of European directives and regulations with a single system. It will apply to European chemical companies who manufacture and/or import chemicals substances into the EU in quantities of more than one tonne per legal entity.
The new regulation aims to generate data on the effects of chemical substances so that they may be used safely. Manufacturers and importers who place chemicals on the market will now be responsible for understanding and managing the risks associated with their use. This should result in a more innovative and competitive European chemical industry that also encourages the substitution of toxic chemicals with safer alternatives.
The key element of REACH regulation is the requirement for manufacturers or importers of chemicals to register them with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). A registration dossier will be supported by a standard data set on that substance. However, the data requirement for each substance will be dependent on the amount that is manufactured or supplied and the toxicity of the substance. So, the largest volume and most toxic substances will require the most data for their registration dossiers. If chemicals are not pre-registered and then registered; then there will no longer be able to market the substance.
Breadth of REACH
It cannot be denied that REACH regulation is extremely complex. A huge number of substances used in the flavour and fragrance industry will be affected by the new regulation. These include fragrance ingredients (eg aroma chemicals, essential oils and natural extracts), flavours in oral care products (eg mint oils), flavours in tobacco and isolated intermediates. There are some exclusions – substances deemed generally safe (eg water, corn oil), preparations (mixtures of substances / blends), flavour and food ingredients and additives, pharmaceutical ingredients and nonisolated intermediates. Essential oils and natural extracts are only included if they are used as flavour or fragrance ingredients in cosmetics.
D-days
With estimates showing around 30,000 substances supplied in quantities of one tonne or more per year on the European market, registering these items presents a significant challenge. To facilitate the process, the first phase is a pre-registration phase which provides companies with a six month window (from 1 June until 1 December 2008) to submit a limited amount of data to the ECHA. By submitting data within this period, companies will be able to benefit from the staggered registration periods set in REACH for phase-in substances.
The pre-registration phase is also in place to allow companies that manufacture or import the same substances to form groups or SIEF (substance information exchange forums) where data is shared to avoid duplication during the registration process.
Here, participants must agree on the classification and labelling of their substances. They must provide other participants with existing research, respond to information requests and collectively identify the need for future studies and arrange for them to be carried out. This is followed by registration, where manufacturers and importers submit information dossiers on substances to the ECHA. Registration is based on two parameters: quantity and toxicity. The timeframe for the process from pre-registration to the final phases of registration is a decade.
These initial deadlines have been set to ensure the most frequently-used and most toxic substances are assessed in the first phase. The substances and dossiers are then evaluated by the ECHA to confirm reliability of all submitted data and authorised for specified use. To place substances with properties that are deemed to be of “very high concern” on the market, an authorisation process must be applied for by 1 June 2009. A company wishing to market or use such a substance must submit an application to the ECHA. Authorisation is then decided by the European authorities.
Getting ready for REACH
Once the full scope of REACH has been understood, it is essential to assess the implications for product portfolios. A key consideration will be the potential need for reformulation – some substances may become unavailable if suppliers are unable to comply with the regulation.
Treatt’s range of products, for example, can be divided into three groups: essential oils and extracts, aroma chemicals and blends (or preparations as they are described in REACH). Each will be treated differently under REACH regulation.
Essential oils and extracts
By far the most complicated category, essential oils and extracts are referred to as Natural Complex Substances (NCS) within the industry or Substances of Unknown or Variable composition (UVCBs) under REACH. Many of these substances are imported into the EU in quantities greater than one tonne per year. The challenge for this category is that many of these substances have been used for hundreds of years, and as a result are generally recognised as safe. This means that the necessary test data has never been generated. Therefore, many companies possess the physicochemical data but lack testing facilities to produce the required human and environmental exposure data. The European Flavour & Fragrance Association and the European Federation of Essential Oils have formulated a plan to assist the industry in preparing for the registration of Natural Complex Substances. This is primarily through the formation of pre-consortia which pre-empt the substance information exchange forum described in the regulation. For the highest priority aroma chemicals and naturals, namely those requiring registration in 2010, this process has already started.
Aroma chemicals
Aroma chemicals can be considered ‘well defined substances’ – substances with a defined qualitative and quantitative composition that can be sufficiently identified based on the required identification parameters. Initial assessments have indicated that for importers and distributors of these substances, like Treatt, much of the required data is already available or will become available through data sharing.
However, assessment of volumes and supply lines will be necessary to determine which substances importers will need to register.
Preparations or blends
Although preparations or blends do not need to be registered under REACH, companies must record the substances in these preparations which are present in quantities greater than one tonne per year.
Implications for the supply chain
The impact of REACH will be felt throughout the supply chain. From raw material suppliers to end product manufacturers, everyone will be affected by the new regulation. Suppliers in the EU, for example, will now be assessed differently to those outside the EU who have no registration obligations. Suppliers outside the EU cannot register for REACH directly. They can, however, opt to nominate an ‘only representative’ – an EU-based representative of a non-EU manufacturer. Appointing an ‘only representative’, allows manufacturers to participate in the REACH process and ensures that they will be able to market their product directly in the EU. It also has advantages for EU importers. They are spared the task of registering the product under REACH and will be regarded as a downstream user.
Throughout the REACH process, customer needs should remain paramount. To maintain optimum customer service, Treatt, for example, has appointed a dedicated co-ordinator for REACH-related matters to respond to all customer and supplier queries. This contact is an in-house expert on the regulations, providing support to the technical, sales and purchasing teams on REACH-related matters, and assisting senior management in developing a company action plan.
The three Cs
Those affected by REACH should consider the three Cs when implementing an action plan – communication, confidentiality and costs. Communication is key. REACH preparation will rely on effective communication between sales, purchasing and regulatory departments. It will involve extensive training, data collection and migration. The finance department will also need to ensure sufficient funds are in place for testing, compensation of existing data holders and the registration process.
Secondly, confidentiality will be an issue with so much dialogue between different members of the supply chain. According to REACH, any details that undermine commercial interests will not be passed on but information relating to safety will never be confidential.
Finally, the costs of compliance will be significant. The authorities are making concessions mindful of the number of SMEs that will be affected. However, there will be financial implications at every stage of REACH that must be considered carefully.
Some of these costs may have to be passed along the supply chain, making it essential to keep abreast of any product margin developments that are business critical.
Summary
There is no doubt that REACH will have a huge impact on the European chemical industry. In fact, it has already had a huge affect on the flavour and fragrance industry; many competitors are finding ways to work together to reach a common goal.
However, despite its challenges, the regulation will offer significant benefits, improving safety and preserving the environment. With careful and advanced preparation, companies can ensure they comply with REACH and continue to run their business effectively and efficiently.

Leading independent flavour and fragrance ingredient specialist, Treatt plc, has launched two new products – Cherry Treattarome Sweet 9850 and Sour Cherry Treattarome 9851. Both 100% natural and FTNF (From the Named Food), these innovative distillates are suitable for a wide variety of applications, where they impart an authentic, well-rounded cherry flavour.
Cherry Treattarome Sweet 9850 is wholly distilled from sweet cherries (Prunus avium). It provides a full sweet cherry flavour with cherry skin- and pit-like notes and a slight tart, green character.
Sour Cherry Treattarome 9851 is extracted from sour cherry variety – Prunus cerasus. This distillate confers a well-rounded sour cherry flavour, with sharp, juicy, tart, cherry pie-like notes.
Extracted using specialist, proprietary technology to ensure maximum flavour entrapment, Cherry Treattarome Sweet 9850 and Sour Cherry Treattarome 9851 can be used to deliver a fresh cherry character to beverages, including teas, juices and alcoholic drinks, dairy products, confectionery and medicines. Their water white appearance makes them particularly suitable for clear beverage applications. The cherry Treattarome products can be used at varying dosage levels. At 0.15%, for example, they impart an intense cherry flavour.
Cherry Treattarome Sweet 9850 and Sour Cherry Treattarome 9851 complement Treatt’s existing portfolio of 100% natural distillates, which includes both sweet and savoury ingredients. Recent additions include the recently launched Tamarind Treattarome 9860 and Rooibos Treattarome 9762, as well as green tea, strawberry and blueberry varieties.

|
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 A FRESH GREEN BREW FROM TREATT |
Treatt plc, the independent flavour and fragrance specialist, has expanded its 100% natural, FTNF Treattarome® range with the launch of the Green Tea Treattarome® 9767. Wholly distilled from green tea (Camellia sinensis), Green Tea Treattarome 9767 provides a well-rounded, full green tea flavour, with a fresh and green front end, finishing with the characteristic flavour that defines green tea.
Green Tea Treattarome 9767 is the result of extensive research and product trials. It is extracted from green tea using Treatt’s specialist, propriety technology. The freshly brewed, hay-like front end and typical green tea finish means Green Tea Treattarome 9767 can be used as the sole ingredient in ready-to-drink (RTD) tea. At lower doses it can provide a hint of green tea aroma to beverages, alcoholic drinks, dairy products and confectionery. It also lends itself to a range of fragrance applications, including cosmetics and perfumes.
As the tea leaves are already brewed, Green Tea Treattarome 9767 offers manufacturers major cost and time savings. It also reduces the clouding and sediment traditionally associated with RTD tea. Manufacturers also benefit from its compatibility with colouring agents, antioxidants and preservatives, and the fact that it provides easier handling than traditional tea powders.
The latest addition to the Treatt portfolio fits with the soaring popularity of green tea products amongst consumers.
Green Tea Treattarome 9767 compliments Treatt’s popular range of natural distillates, which already includes Tea Treattarome - Iced 9765, Black Tea Treattarome – Light 9760 and Black Tea Treattarome – Brewed 9761.

Global, independent flavour ingredient specialist, Treatt plc, has launched Habanero Pepper Treattarome® 9815. This latest addition to Treatt’s expanding range of 100% natural Treattarome ingredients is wholly distilled from fresh, top-grade habanero peppers, the hottest chilli pepper variety in the world. Beyond its piquancy, Habanero Pepper Treattarome 9815 offers flavourists an unusual and complex flavour profile suitable for a variety of applications.
Using specialist, proprietary technology, Treatt ensures maximum flavour extraction, capturing the habanero flavour without the heat usually associated with capsicum. Developers can therefore incorporate an authentic, well-rounded pepper flavour while controlling spice levels to suit their requirements. Dosage levels can also be varied to suit diverse flavour profiles. At 0.1%, for example, it offers an intense fresh, fruity habanero flavour, while at 0.01% or less, deep roasted pepper flavours can be achieved, which is enhanced by general tropical notes.
With spicy sauces becoming increasingly popular, successful applications for Habanero Pepper Treattarome 9815 include salsas and pepper sauces. However, with its tropical fruit front-end flavours, it is also an interesting addition to beverages.
Habanero Pepper Treattarome 9815 compliments the diverse range of savoury Treattarome products, which includes roasted red pepper, watercress, celery and green bell pepper varieties.

This latest addition to Treatt’s portfolio of FTNF (From the Named Food) clear distillates is wholly distilled from strawberries and imparts an authentic, fresh, fruity and well-rounded strawberry flavour to many food systems.
100% natural and water-soluble, Strawberry Treattarome 9855 is suitable for clear beverages, juices, alcoholic drinks and dairy products such as smoothies and ice creams. Thursday, August 17, 2006 COCOA TREATTEROME - A RICH AND CREAMY TREATT |
Global flavour and fragrance ingredients specialists, Treatt plc, has expanded its innovative range of 100% natural, high impact distillates with the launch of Cocoa Treattarome™ Dark 9900. This latest addition to the Treatt portfolio offers a well rounded, organic cocoa flavour to food and beverage systems.
Wholly distilled from cocoa (Theobroma Cacao), Cocoa Treattarome Dark 9900 delivers an authentic chocolate character with a creamy, nutty front end with powdered cocoa, white chocolate notes and a dark roasted finish. This is achieved through Treatt’s specialist manufacturing techniques which ensure maximum flavour extraction. Also, there is no extended heat processing which leads to lower flavour artefacts. Cocoa Treattarome Dark 9900 contains esters of acetic acid, a variety of pyrazines, 2-heptanone, 2-heptanol, phenyl acetaldehyde, Benzaldehyde and phenyl ethyl acetate.
Depending on the desired flavour profile, Cocoa Treattarome Dark 9900 can be used at varying dosage levels. For example, at 0.1% as a sole flavouring, it offers an intense chocolate character, while at 0.05% or less, a mild, creamy cocoa aroma is produced.
Cocoa Treattarome Dark 9900 is entirely water soluble and particularly suitable for clear beverages, alcoholic drinks, juices and dairy products. The relatively high levels of isoamyl acetate, methyl, tetra methyl, ethyl and numerous substituted pyrazines in cocoa mean it blends well with banana and other flavours used in beverages and milk shakes.

Wednesday, May 31, 2006 TREATT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN BLUEBERRIES |
Independent flavour and fragrance specialist, Treatt plc, has introduced Blueberry Treattarome® 9840 to its expanding range of 100% natural, FTNF (From The Named Food) flavour ingredients. Wholly distilled from top grade, freshly cultivated berries, Blueberry Treattarome 9840 delivers a well-rounded, authentic and ripe blueberry flavour with a floral top note and a creamy, fruity finish to many food and drink systems.
Derived from the native American fruit (Vaccinium Corymbosum), Blueberry Treattarome 9840 is produced within ten minutes of the fruit being processed. To capture the maximum flavour and retain the freshness of the berry, Treatt uses specialised low temperature distillation technology. Blueberry Treattarome 9840 works well either as a sole flavouring or as an enhancer to existing flavour systems. For example, at 0.1%, it provides an intense blueberry character with fresh, floral and fruity top notes. At 0.01%, it adds a fruity berry character to fruit punches and other mixed drinks.
The clear appearance and water solubility of Blueberry Treattarome 9840 make it a highly versatile flavour ingredient, suitable for use in dairy products, soft drinks, fruit juices, teas and alcoholic beverages. Containing high levels of linalool, gernaiol and beta ionone, the distillate is also an easy way to add a fruity flavour to tea. Importantly, Blueberry Treattarome 9840 offers manufacturers a clean label declaration.
Blueberry Treattarome 9840 complements Treatt’s rapidly expanding selection of aqueous, FTNF distillates. Recent offerings include Mango Treattarome 9830 and Sugar Treattarome 9807.

|
Monday, December 19, 2005 SUGAR SWEET FROM TREATT |
Treatt plc, the global flavour ingredients specialist, has expanded its range of FTNF (From The Named Food) Treattarome® products with the launch of Sugar Treattarome 9807. Wholly distilled from cane sugar (Saccharum officinarum), Sugar Treattarome 9807 imparts an authentic, sweet flavour to a variety of food and drink systems without adding sugar, calories, protein or colour.
100% natural and sugar-free, Sugar Treattarome 9807 is a clear, water-white distillate developed using Treatt’s propriety technology. It is entirely water soluble and therefore particularly suitable for clear beverages, sodas and alcoholic drinks, including diet varieties, plus dairy products. When used in these applications, Sugar Treattarome 9807 adds a slight brown sugar, smoky and creamy flavour impression, while at the same time enhancing the delicate sweet and savoury notes. It works in synergy with artificial sweeteners where it is effective in masking the harsh character that these additives often bring.
Sugar Treattarome 9807 can be used in varying dosages depending on the flavour impact required. At 0.15%, it gives a sweet, smooth character, while at levels of 0.005% or less, a strong impact in high strength flavour blends is provided.
Sugar Treattarome 9807 is the latest in the Treattarome range of unique FTNF water-soluble distillates. Produced using a short duration, low temperature distillation process, this method ensures the distillate retains the character of the original, fresh food.

Monday, July 12, 2004 MANGO – THE LATEST TROPICAL TREATT
|
Monday, July 12, 2004 MANGO – THE LATEST TROPICAL TREATT |
Global flavour ingredients specialists Treatt plc has extended its tropical Treattarome™ range with the launch of Mango Treattarome 9830. This latest addition to Treatt’s portfolio of 100% natural FTNF (From The Named Food) products is wholly distilled from fresh, tree-ripened mangoes and enables the creation of long-lasting, creamy, sweet mango flavours. Successful applications already include tropical fruit blends, clear beverages, ices and ice cream.
With more than 100 varieties of mangoes grown commercially worldwide, the mango is known to have many differing flavour characteristics. Some varieties have a fairly neutral or non-specific flavour and are cultivated principally for the colour and consistency of their flesh. Treatt’s selection of a single variety with a powerful and complex taste, enables it to produce a universally recognisable mango FNTF distillate, which is also consistent in its flavour profile. This is achieved through Treatt’s innovative and specialist technology.
The distillate contains high levels of fruity esters and lactones, plus spicy terpenes, underplayed with several sugary / caramel-like furanones. Mango Treattarome 9830 can be used at varying dosage levels, depending on the flavourist’s requirements and the degree of flavour intensity required. Mango Treattarome 9830 is effective, for example, either as a top note to enhance an existing flavour or to provide the main body of the flavour. At 0.1% an intense mango character predominates, whilst at levels of 0.05% or less, it imparts fresh, spicy, tropical notes, which is particularly effective when combined with fruit juices.
The Treattarome range of FTNF, water-soluble distillates are produced using a short duration, low temperature distillation process, which ensures maximum flavour entrapment, maintaining the character of the fresh food. Mango Treattarome 9830 complements Treatt’s existing portfolio of tropical flavour ingredients, which include guava, kiwi, banana, passion fruit and watermelon.

Tuesday, June 01, 2004 TREATT YOURSELF TO FINE FRAGRANCES AT WPC |
Treatt plc, stand 280, World Perfumery Congress, Cannes, 1 –5 June 2004
Leading fragrance ingredients specialist Treatt plc will be presenting a selection of products from its extensive portfolio at this year’s World Perfumery Congress in Cannes. Highlights will include citrus and non-citrus oils, natural innovative fractions, the Treattarome™ range, Treattarome™ derivatives and various specialty chemicals. Of particular interest are a number of new fragrance ingredients shown for the first time at WPC. These include the lemon and lime HV products as well as nitrogen and sulphur chemicals such as 2-Methyl-4-propyl-1,3-oxathiane with its distinctive passion fruit characteristics.
In view of recent legislation issues in Europe, Treatt’s new low allergen fragrance ingredients will be a key focus at the show. Developed using the company’s manufacturing and fractionation expertise, the range includes orange, lavender and petitgrain products.
Treatt's distillation skills will be further demonstrated by its HV products, in particular the lemon and lime varieties. Lemon and Lime HV are 100% natural specialty fractions, produced by capturing the highly volatile components from the fruit. The concentrated, zesty notes provided by these ingredients give freshness and lift to fragrance creations, and enhance the top note.

Thursday, October 23, 2003 TREATT - THE SAVOURY STOP AT FIE
|
Thursday, October 23, 2003 TREATT - THE SAVOURY STOP AT FIE |
Treatt plc, stand M884, Food Ingredients Europe 2003, Messe Frankfurt, Germany
18 – 20 November 2003
Visitors on the lookout for savoury flavour ingredients to stimulate the senses should stop at stand M884 at this year’s Fi Europe exhibition. All natural, vegetable-based distillates which impart high impact, fresh notes are the latest products to be launched by independent flavour ingredients specialist Treatt plc. Other highlights include a natural, spicy Black Pepper Distillate, plus the recently FEMA (Flavour and Extract Manufacturers Association) approved high impact flavour chemical,
3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione.
Ideal for creative savoury applications, roasted bell pepper, watercress and celery are the most recent introductions to the TreattaromeTM range of FTNF (From The Named Food) natural distillates. Derived from premium quality, fresh vegetables, these
water-soluble ingredients can authentically enhance savoury flavour profiles. Their natural status also provides flavourists with the opportunity to cost-effectively enliven flavour blends, without affecting the ingredients label.
Roasted Bell Pepper Treattarome 9810, produced from fresh green, red and yellow peppers, imparts a characteristic, char-roasted, capsicum flavour, with grilled and astringent top notes. Distilled from fresh watercress, Watercress Treattarome 9820 has strong green, peppery and astringent cress notes with hints of butter, potato and onion. Celery Treattarome 9790 has a powerful sulphur character, with traces of green, nutty and creamy flavours. These novel ingredients complement Treatt’s rapidly expanding savoury compendium, which includes Cucumber Treattarome 9721, Tomato Treattarome 9722 and Green Bell Pepper Treattarome 9723.
Treatt will also be showcasing Black Pepper Distillate, a natural specialty with a characteristic freshly milled black pepper flavour. With a warm, spicy, fruity aroma, this specialty is also reminiscent of brown sugar and chocolate. Further savoury developments include the FEMA (#4057) approved status of
3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione, which enables Treatt to offer this distinctive chemical to flavourists worldwide. Imparting hay-like green notes, 3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione is found naturally occurring in dry green and black tea as well as dry parsley, and is suitable for use in tea, honey and parsley formulations.
To sample these, plus a selection of Treatt’s other products including essential oils, citrus specialties and high impact aroma chemicals, visitors should plan to call at stand M884. Representatives will also be on hand to offer expert advice and technical details on Treatt’s expansive product portfolio.

Tuesday, April 08, 2003 SAVOURY TREATT AT IFT 2003
|
Tuesday, April 08, 2003 SAVOURY TREATT AT IFT 2003 |
Treatt plc, stand 2362, IFT 2003, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 12 - 16 July 2003
Visitors looking for fresh, savoury creations should plan to stop at stand 2362, where flavour ingredients expert Treatt, will be unveiling its new selection of natural vegetable distillates. Other savoury innovations, including a natural specialty rich in bell pepper character and an intense celery distillate, will also be highlighted at the show.
Roasted pepper, watercress and celery are the latest savoury additions to the TreattaromeÔ range of FTNF (from the named food) specialty aqueous distillates to be launched at the show. These new products complement Treatt’s existing portfolio, which includes Tomato Treattarome 9722, Cucumber Treattarome 9721 and Green Bell Pepper Treattarome 9723. These Treattarome products impart a high impact flavour without increasing acidity levels and have been successfully used in vegetable blends and beverages plus soups, sauces and dressings. Wholly distilled from fresh fruit and vegetables, they are ideal for flavourists searching for new ingredients to provide an authentic taste and a clean label.
Treatt will also introduce TreattazineÔ – a natural specialty with a characteristic green bell pepper taste. Of further interest are the potato, green bean and earthy notes present. Additionally, Treattazine can enhance and sweeten savoury applications.
For an intense but typical celery flavour, Treatt has developed a natural celery distillate. Derived from celery seed, it has a powerful celery odour and flavour with some walnut-like notes. The distillate contains enhanced levels of phthalides compared with the standard celery seed oil.
Visitors can sample these plus a wide selection of Treatt’s other flavour ingredients, including essential oils, natural fractions, concentrated and terpeneless oils and high impact synthetic specialty chemicals, on stand 2362.

|
Tuesday, December 03, 2002 CELERY DISTILLATE GETS INTENSE TREATT-MENT |
Flavour ingredients specialist Treatt plc has launched a natural Celery Oil Distillate. Derived from celery seed, it has an intense but typical celery flavour making it ideal for savoury flavour creations.
The distillate contains enhanced levels of phthalides – the chemicals responsible for the characteristic celery odour – compared with celery seed oil. Additionally, Celery Oil Distillate offers flavourists the handling advantages of a distillate over the traditionally used celery oleoresin. Clear yellow in colour, it has a significantly more intense celery character than the oleoresin without its stickiness or dark colour.
Celery Oil Distillate is the latest in Treatt’s expanding range of savoury flavour ingredients. The company is currently working on other new savoury products to be launched over the next year. In addition to its savoury products, Treatt manufactures and supplies over 3,000 essential oils, natural fractions and aromatic chemicals for the flavour and fragrance industries.

Monday, September 30, 2002 TREATT - NEW NAME, NEW LOCATION
|
Monday, September 30, 2002 TREATT - NEW NAME, NEW LOCATION |
Treatt plc has announced a series of strategic changes to its US business. The company has relocated its US facility to Lakeland, Florida and renamed it Treatt USA. The move from Haines City to the new 65,000 sq ft premises, approximately 20 miles away, demonstrates Treatt’s commitment to the US market and enhances its ability to respond to current and future customer requirements.
Transfer to the new site was completed at the end of September. Home to 29 employees, the premises provide Treatt USA with modern, spacious facilities designed in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). In addition, extensive planning of the layout of processing plants, warehousing facilities, laboratories and offices, ensures the new site has complete, controlled access for increased product security and integrity. Total investment is US$6M.
The US team is strengthened by the appointment of Dr. John Boddington, who joins as manager natural products (non-essential oil derived) from 1 October. Boddington’s responsibilities include overseeing commercial, production and R&D functions related to the TreattaromeÔ FTNF (from the named food) natural distillates – which also benefit from a dedicated production area. Boddington, formerly natural research and development manager at Treatt’s UK centre, has worked with the company for eight years.
The Lakeland facility incorporates an 11,000 sq ft warehouse and gives Treatt USA increased processing and blending capacity. Additionally, the technical laboratories – including QC, applications and sampling – have all been expanded and upgraded.
Treatt USA is the new name for Florida Treatt – a change that reflects the evolution of the company’s business and its broadening product range.
Commenting on the move, Hugo Bovill, managing director, Treatt plc, said: "This is a very positive move for us and a sign of our continued commitment to meeting customer demands. The new, larger plant provides Treatt USA with state-of-the-art laboratories, as well as increased space for product inventory. With an additional five acres of undeveloped ground there is also plenty of scope for future developments."
Treatt is a world-leading independent ingredients supplier to the flavour and fragrance industries. The turnover of Treatt plc, a publicly listed company on the London Stock Exchange, in 2001 was US$38.64m. Its wholly owned American subsidiary, now called Treatt USA, was formed in 1990. The company manufactures and supplies a vast inventory of innovative products including essential oils and their natural fractions, specialty chemicals and a range of Treattarome FTNF (from the named food) natural distillates.

Sunday, June 16, 2002 KIWI GETS FRESH TREATTMENT
|
Sunday, June 16, 2002 KIWI GETS FRESH TREATTMENT |
Global flavour ingredients specialist Treatt plc has launched Kiwifruit TreattaromeÔ 9770, a new kiwifruit distillate which imparts a fruity, green flavour to many food systems. Kiwifruit Treattarome 9770 is distilled from fresh, top grade fruit and is therefore classified as FTNF (From The Named Food). It is particularly effective in clear, natural beverages and natural juice blends, and has already successfully been applied to drinks, juices, alcoholic drinks, dairy products and dressings.
Treatt’s innovative, specialist technology combined with top grade fruit selection ensures maximum flavour entrapment. The flavour of kiwi is extremely sensitive to degrees of ripeness, with ester levels increasing markedly as the fruit softens. Through its processing technique, Treatt can achieve a balance between the fresh, green ‘bean like’ components and the sweet, ripe esters.
Kiwifruit Treattarome 9770 provides high impact odour and flavour profiles – even at low levels. As the sole flavouring, for example at 0.1%, Kiwifruit Treattarome 9770 provides an intense kiwi character which is fresh, green and fruity. In a blend, at 0.05% or less, it still gives tropical green/strawberry notes with gooseberry, green tea and grape skin undertones and is particularly effective in natural/WONF (With Other Natural Flavourings) strawberry and tropical blends.
Kiwifruit Treattarome 9770 is the latest in the Treattarome range of unique FTNF water-soluble distillates. Other products in the range include distillates from various fruits, vegetables and crop sources including tropical passion fruit, guava, banana, watermelon and cantaloupe melon.
Treatt manufactures and supplies a vast inventory of innovative products including essential oils, their natural fractions and aromatic chemicals for the flavour and fragrance industries.

Innovative flavour ingredients from Treatt’s product portfolio will be on show at stand 6335 at IFT 2002. Highlights will include garden/vegetable and tea TreattaromeTM FTNF (from the named food) natural distillates, citrus fresh notes and specialty chemicals for savoury applications.
Treatt’s range of specialty soluble Treattarome FTNF distillates are 100% natural and offer flavourists the opportunity to create distinctive flavour profiles. Treatt recently extended this range to 17 natural distillates from various tropical fruits, vegetables and crop sources including cucumber, green pepper and tea. Latest developments in natural distillates will be announced at IFT.
Two natural tea distillates have been developed by Treatt which are water white, so suitable for clear beverages, plus ready-to-drink iced tea. Combined with other Treattarome products these distillates can also produce an entirely natural fruit tea. Black Tea Light Treattarome 9760 and Black Tea Brewed Treattarome 9761 are collected entirely from black tea – Thea sinensis – and blended to achieve a consistent flavour spectrum.
Treatt’s portfolio of citrus specialties including concentrated and folded citrus oils. At IFT two highly volatile fractions – which provide intense, well-balanced citrus notes at extremely low doses – will be demonstrated. Applications span the full range of beverages, including soft drinks, isotonic and alcoholic drinks plus juices. Other citrus products on show include top notes, to enhance and enliven products cost-effectively, plus highly concentrated citrus oils designed to add fresh, juicy character to flavour creations.
